Neil Cawthorne was born and lives in Leicestershire, surrounded by what is considered by many to be England’s finest hunting country. His interest in both horses and art stretches back as far as he can remember and in 1965 he decided to combine these joint interests. There followed four years of study with the late John Kenney, regarded as one of the very best sporting artists of recent years. This period together with his admiration for the work of Sir Alfred Munnings and Lionel Edwards, helped to create the unique and distinctive style for which he is now so widely recognised.
His first one man exhibition was held in1969, and completely sold out. A number of other exhibitions followed, and soon he was being commissioned to paint many well known horses in training and at stud, in addition to his work in the hunting field.
The first major limited editions of his work were published in 1977, and early prints that have sold out have been seen to increase in value by as much as four times their published price. Neil Cawthorne now enjoys an international reputation, and his work is to be found in many collections, including those of His Royal Highness The Prince of Wales, and Mr Paul Mellon.
