Description
I offer one on one guitar making lessons and group classes in my workshop. You will be guided through the complete process of constructing the guitar, starting with just blocks of wood. You will be learning with mainly hand tools and would have your own bench in my workshop. All necessary tools are provided but if you have your own then feel free to use them. You can build a classical, flamenco, or steel string guitar. Students keep the instrument at the end of the course.
The lessons would start with us deciding on a guitar design- we would discuss your playing style, what music you would want to play, and how you would want the instrument to feel. First we would decide whether you wanted a nylon or steel stringed instrument, then we would discuss the shape of the instrument, either building a replica of a guitar you like or creating a new design. We would then select tonewood that would fits both the tone we want and the design of the instrument.
We would build in the traditional spanish method, where the body is built around the neck and soundboard. The traditional spanish method allows us to prepare all the parts of the guitar and then assemble the guitar body in a relatively short amount of time. This method also allows us to create unique body shapes and not be restricted by outside moulds. Most students start with no woodworking experience and this method allows the student to familiarize themselves with basic woodworking skills while constructing the guitar. If you are interested in how we would build the instrument, email me and I can send you a photo log of a flamenco guitar built in the traditional spanish method.
My teaching schedule is flexible and I am able to teach daytime and evenings on weekdays and weekends.
